Faroe Islands: Faroe Islands Bike Tour

DAY 1:

Introductions.

Begin your adventure with a warm welcome at your first inn, followed by a safety briefing and bike fitting. If time permits, test your bikes out with a ride to nearby Bøur to take a peek at the distinctive sea stacks of Drangarnir and Tindholmur.

DAY 2:

Sørvágur to Tórshavn ~48km (+1070m / -1200m).

Cycle to Tórshavn, one of the smallest and northernmost capitals in the world. Named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder, this charming harbor town offers a blend of rich history and modern vibrancy. The journey from Bøur features a mix of gentle inclines and coastal descents, showcasing the rugged beauty of Streymoy island as you approach Tórshavn. Upon arrival, consider visiting the fascinating Tjóðsavnið (The National Museum) to explore the islands' natural history, or take a stroll through Tinganes, the historic site of Viking-era governance. This day offers a perfect combination of scenic adventure and cultural immersion in the heart of the Faroes.

DAY 3:

Explore Nolsoy Island.

Take a ferry to Nólsoy Island, known for its abundant puffin colonies, rugged trails, and laid-back vibe. The island offers a peaceful escape, where you can discover the largest storm petrel colony in Europe and experience a landscape that remains wild and untouched. While cycling on Nólsoy allows you to explore its dramatic terrain, guests should note that the biking paths can be rough and challenging. If you’d rather an alternative, opt for hiking one of the many scenic trails. Make sure to visit Maggie's café, a cozy and inviting spot to enjoy a warm drink and take in the island's relaxed atmosphere. For a deeper dive into the island’s maritime history, stop by the Nólsoy Village Museum, which offers fascinating insights into the island’s seafaring past.

DAY 4:

Tórshavn to Klaksvík ~42km (+815m, -780m).

Today's ride takes you from Tórshavn to Klaksvík, the second-largest town in the Faroe Islands, situated on the northern island of Borðoy. The town’s origins date back to Viking times, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that Klaksvík merged into a modern Faroese town. Over time, it has become a cultural and commercial hub, playing a central role for both the Northern Isles and the entire Faroe Islands archipelago. As you cycle along the rugged coastline, you'll enjoy stunning views of dramatic cliffs and tranquil fjords. The route includes a memorable passage through the renowned Eysturoy Tunnel, a feat of engineering that connects Streymoy and Eysturoy islands by traversing the Tangafjørður sound. The cycling today is moderate, with gentle inclines and scenic coastal stretches, making it both a challenging and rewarding journey. Upon reaching Klaksvík, take time to explore the town's harbor and its vibrant cultural life, all set against the spectacular backdrop of the surrounding mountains.

DAY 5:

Klaksvik to Gjógv ~49km (+925m / -900m).

Today’s route takes you through the stunning Eiði valley on the island of Eysturoy, offering views of towering cliffs, serene fjords, and distant mountain peaks, with the most notable being the impressive Slættaratindur, the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands (882m). Expect winding roads, sharp inclines, and rewarding downhill stretches as you approach Gjógv, making this a moderately challenging ride with a few stretches that will push your endurance. Upon arriving in Gjógv, be sure to visit the village’s iconic ravine, the “Gjógv,” a 200-meter-long gorge that has served as a natural harbor for centuries. The steep, winding staircase leading down into the Cleft of Gjógv offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the area and listen to the soothing sound of the sea.

DAY 6:

Gjógv to Sørvágur ~67km (+1100m / -995m).

Leaving behind the town of Gjógv, continue your journey to Sørvágur, where you’ll enjoy the village’s stunning coastal views, traditional Faroese architecture, and charming harbor. This tranquil village offers a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for soaking in the natural beauty of Vágar Island.

DAY 7:

Explore Mykines Island.

Mykines is the westernmost of the 18 far-flung Faroe Islands and is accessible only by boat. The rugged island, dotted with grass-roofed homes, is home to over 500,000 puffins, the largest colony in the country, and offers spectacular views of the North Atlantic Ocean in every direction. With no more than 250 visitors on the island each day, Mykines provides a day of spectacular hiking to the iconic Holmur lighthouse on its western tip. This is a truly breathtaking hike, with consistently stunning scenery – a fitting way to spend your last day in the Faroese archipelago.
