Denmark & Sweden: Copenhagen to Gothenburg Kattegattleden Bike Tour

DAY 1:

Introductions & Copenhagen Loop ~30km (100m / -100m).

Meet in Denmark's fascinating capital city, Copenhagen, for a warm-up loop ride. Trade the bustle of the city for quiet bike paths running alongside the beautiful Baltic Sea on the way to Amager Island. Popular with local nature lovers and sports enthusiasts for its sandy lagoons and protected nature areas, Amager Island has been called the 'kitchen of Copenhagen' thanks to its fertile soil. Return to the city to enjoy the local scene and sample some traditional flavours during a welcome dinner.

DAY 2:

Copenhagen to Höganäs ~81km (+390m / -400m).

Cycle north to Helsingør, best known for Kronborg Castle, the inspiration behind Shakespeare's setting for Hamlet. A 20-minute ferry ride takes you into Sweden, where you'll begin cycling along the Kattegattleden, Sweden's first national bicycle route. This section of the Kattegattleden offers a scenic coastal tour from Helsingborg to Höganäs, with stunning views of the Öresund and across to Danish Zealand. The route is dotted with picturesque marinas and fishing villages, such as Domsten and Viken. The region's agricultural heritage is evident in the charming market shops and fine vineyards of Höganäs, your destination for the day.

DAY 3:

Höganäs to Ängelholm ~35km (+200m / -200m).

Continue along the path from Höganäs toward the stunning, rocky landscape of Kullahalvön. This unique region has attracted artists and tourists—bathing suits in hand—for centuries. At the furthest tip of Kullahalvön lies the Kullaberg Nature Reserve, a worthwhile detour if time allows. Along the way, you’ll pass countless picturesque beaches, scenic harbors, vineyards, and charming farm shops, with high chances of spotting seals and porpoises. The route circles the dramatic Kullahalvön peninsula and leads to the 500-year-old coastal town of Ängelholm. Known as a potters' haven, the town brims with artistic creativity, and many local studios welcome visitors.

DAY 4:

Ängelholm to Båstad ~54km (+410m / -410m).

From Ängelholm, the Kattegattleden continues along the coast, passing the Rönne River and small villages such as Skepparkrogen and Björkhagen before reaching Vejbystrand. Cycle through open shoreline meadows, charming coastal communities, and small stretches of forest. Follow the path west into the heart of Bjäre, where the scenery transitions to a modern agricultural landscape of vast fields, gradually giving way to the traditional farmland that has defined Bjärehalvön since prehistoric times. Arrive at the port in Torekov, traveling along the coast before returning inland for a thrilling descent down the ridge. Enjoy magnificent sea views as you descend into the harbor town of Båstad, your home for the night.

DAY 5:

Båstad to Halmstad ~51km (+245m / -235m).

Enjoy an easy and scenic stretch toward Halmstad today as you ride along expansive sandy beaches and rolling dunes. A quick detour to downtown Laholm is highly recommended, with its narrow cobblestone streets and cozy charm. Continue along one of Sweden's longest beaches and swimming areas before cycling through the Hökafältet pine forest, a 417-hectare nature reserve protected since the early 1970s. At Lagaoset, where the Lagan River meets the ocean, witness the dynamic interplay of nature as gentle currents reshape the coastline, forming new trails. From the dune tops, take in spectacular views of this ever-changing landscape. For those seeking more adventure, an optional detour to Påarp’s shingle field reveals an Iron Age burial ground with 220 ancient graves. Continuing through Trönninge, you’ll pass the site of the historic Battle of Halmstad in 1676. Arrive in Halmstad, a vibrant city at the mouth of the Nissan River, known for its port, university, industries, and recreational offerings. If staying in Tylösand, extend your journey along the route for an additional 8 km.

DAY 6:

Halmstad to Falkenberg ~49km (+280m / -290m).

Depart from Halmstad, cycling past the beaches of Frösakull, Ringenäs, and Vilshärad before the route turns east to join the coastal road. Stop at the picturesque windmill in Särdal, home to a cozy café and a farm shop. Along the way, you'll pass several pristine nature reserves and unique beach meadows near the charming village of Steninge. The scenery transitions from lush forest to a barren, stony landscape affectionately called 'Molom' in the songs of renowned local poet and singer Alf Hambe. At Steninge beach (known as Steninge Skäret), take a moment to admire the skerries, beautifully flattened and smoothed by the sea.

DAY 7:

Falkenberg to Varberg ~39km (+155m / -150m).

Cycle from Falkenberg, one of Halland's oldest medieval towns, along the water through wide-open scenery. On the way to Varberg, pass picturesque fishing villages, charming farm stands, and numerous beaches, including Apelviken, a favorite among windsurfers from across Europe. Enter Varberg via a scenic boardwalk, taking in views of the iconic Varberg Fortress before settling in for the evening at your resting place.

DAY 8:

Varberg to Särö ~89km (+530m / -520m).

As you ride north of Varberg, sandy beaches give way to rocky cliffs, with scattered tiny islands dotting the horizon. Pass through Bua Harbour, one of Halland's largest fishing villages, before continuing through Frillesås, where the path has mixed traffic. From there, enjoy a car-free stretch along the coast on the old railway embankment. Take a break at one of Åsa's swimming beaches to savor an ice cream at the café or enjoy coffee and a treat at the bakery. For a delightful detour, visit Tjolöholm Castle, Sweden's only Tudor-style castle. Next, explore the Li Grave Stones, a late Iron Age burial site that originally contained over 200 standing stones, about 100 of which remain today. Leaving Fjärås Bräcka behind, cycle along small roads and bike paths through fields, horse pastures, and towns like Kungsbacka, one of western Sweden's major trade centers. Follow the bike paths alongside the Kungsbacka Fjord and quiet roads on the Onsalahalvön peninsula to reach your lodging for the night in Särö.

DAY 9:

Särö to Gothenburg ~37km (+230m / -240m).

Originally an agricultural area, Särö became a popular summer resort in the late 19th century, attracting royalty and Gothenburg's high society. Take a short detour for a seaside stroll through the Särö Västerskog nature reserve to see why. After leaving the seaside town behind, you'll reach the old Säröbanan railway embankment, which runs along the water. The trail winds past cliffs, lush forests, bays, and small harbours, offering plenty of opportunities for a swim. As you approach central Gothenburg, the trail passes the Klippan Culture Reserve, home to the ruins of Älvsborg Fortress and St. Birgitta’s Chapel. The final stretch follows the Göta älv, a majestic river that drains Lake Vänern into the Kattegat, leading you to your centrally located hotel in Gothenburg. Your guides will bid you farewell this afternoon after your check-in at the hotel.
