Your Gear Guide for your Freewheeling Adventure

Your Gear Guide for your Freewheeling Adventure

Part of the charm of a Freewheeling Adventures bike tour is the ability to show up and have all the tedious details already taken care of. This is especially true on guided tours, where knowledgeable and well-equipped guides can handle any situation thrown at them. Got a flat tire mid-ride? No problem, our guides can quickly fix it and get you back in the saddle. Or perhaps you need a midday pick-me-up? Guides will make a fresh cup of coffee at the next rendezvous point. Having the right gear is essential for a smooth and successful trip, and in this blog post, we’ll delve into the must-have gear for bike tour guides. So, gear up and get ready to explore the open road with confidence!

Touring Bike: Your Trusty Companion

A successful bike tour starts with a great bike that is reliable and enjoyable to ride. This may include a hybrid-fitness bike, suitable for road and light trails, a fast and light road bike, or an excellent electric-assist e-bike.

The most commonly used bike on a Freewheeling tour is the Trek FX 3, a stylish and versatile hybrid bike with disc brakes that let you stop on a dime, even when the weather isn’t cooperating. Some key features of these bikes include:

  • Aluminum frame for comfort and durability.
  • Geometry: Upright riding position for comfort and control, ideal for cruising and commuting.
  • Drivetrain: A reliable gear system with multiple speeds for tackling varied terrain.
  • Disc brakes, so you can stop 30kg+ as it speeds down a hill.
  • Wheels: Mid-width tires that offer a good balance of comfort and efficiency on paved roads and light trails.

Fixing Flats on the Fly

Even the most prepared and experienced cyclists can’t escape the odd flat tire. A flat tire on a desolate stretch of road can quickly derail your entire adventure. Packing a spare tube, a patch repair kit, and a reliable pump ensures you have the power to get yourself back rolling, turning a potential setback into a minor inconvenience and keeping the day’s ride on track. These come standard with all our rental bikes on any Freewheeling Adventures tour.

A manual floor pump is carried by your Freewheeling guide or support person for such situations, in addition to a flat tire repair kit. Recently, Freewheeling guides have been bringing a small rechargeable electronic air pump, called the AS2 Pro Max, on local tours. This mighty little machine is lightweight and small, making it easy to slip in a bike bag without weighing the cyclist down on longer stretches. It’s rechargeable, making it more sustainable than a CO2 canister, and is simple to use. A single charge on this device can inflate about two tires. So although it might not work with extended use, it’s convenient for a quick roadside repair, getting you back on the road swiftly.

Never Get Lost with Navigation

Worried about getting lost while on a bike tour in a remote country? Have no fear, all Freewheeling guides and guests are provided with printed maps that highlight daily route instructions, and you can access digital versions via the Freewheeling App. You can use these tools together, or independently. If you prefer to have more assistance with your navigation, please consider booking a guided tour. For added convenience, you can download your trip routes for offline use with RideWithGPS during your tour.

No bike tour can be successful without knowledge of where you are going, and the Freewheeling Adventures Mobile App takes care of this for you and more. Fueling for the Journey

This one is a no-brainer, Freewheeling guides are always packing a plethora of snacks to enjoy on the trail to give guests a boost in energy and satisfy empty bellies when needed. Some guide favourites include chocolate, dried fruit and nuts, salty crackers, and energy bars.

At Freewheeling Adventures, we are passionate about two things: providing exceptionally active holidays for our guests, and coffee. On each tour we provide our guides with the means necessary to make a rich and smooth cup of joe, including locally sourced coffee beans, and a french press or moka pot. Beans are ground by hand as the water is heating for the freshest java possible, and just the thing riders might need to get them through the next stretch of trail.

Rest assured, your tour guide will be outfitted with all the necessary gear to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. From repair tools to communication devices, they’ll be prepared for anything the road throws your way. This allows you to relax, soak in the scenery, and focus on the joy of the ride. So pack your bags, hop on your bike, and get ready to experience the adventure with complete confidence!
